U.S. Bank completes live stablecoin transaction on Stellar blockchain
U.S. Bank has successfully completed a live transaction using its proprietary stablecoin, USBDC, on the Stellar blockchain. The pilot program involved transferring digital assets between bank-owned entities in North America and Europe, testing core functions such as minting, payment redemption, and regulatory mechanisms like freezing and clawbacks. This development occurs amid a shifting regulatory landscape in the United States, with the GENIUS Act and the CLARITY Act expected to shape the future of digital assets.
Separately, research into stablecoins like USDC highlights their ability to accelerate international money transfers. For example, a transfer of 200 USDC from Italy to Brazil incurs costs of approximately 2.70%, whereas traditional services like Wise can charge between 4.68% and 4.89%. While stablecoins offer speed and the ability to hold funds in dollars, users face challenges regarding conversion, cash-out processes, and the lack of bank deposit insurance for these balances.
