BankChain Alliance formed by 39 US state banking associations
Thirty-nine US state banking associations have formed the BankChain Alliance to develop a nationwide, industry-owned blockchain network. The initiative aims to provide a regulated infrastructure for digital financial services, including smart payments, tokenized deposits, stablecoins, and automated settlement. The alliance targets a 2027 launch and is currently in the process of selecting a technology partner.
The participating associations represent 3,283 banks with approximately $21.8 trillion in assets. The project is designed to be industry-governed, allowing community and regional banks to participate in infrastructure that might otherwise be dominated by large institutional banks or crypto-native firms. The network is intended to be interoperable with other existing blockchain systems.
Kathy Kraninger, CEO of the Florida Bankers Association and former director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, is serving as the interim chair. This move follows recent legislative developments, such as the GENIUS Act, and represents a strategic effort by the traditional banking sector to integrate blockchain technology within established regulatory frameworks.
