U.S. banks collect $3 billion in overdraft fees in six months

U.S. banks collected approximately $2.96 billion in combined overdraft and non-sufficient funds (NSF) fees during the first six months of 2026. This data, based on an analysis of Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC) Call Report data, covers 512 banks with assets exceeding $1 billion. The total nationwide revenue is expected to be higher, as smaller banks are not required to report such data.

While several major institutions have reduced or eliminated overdraft fees since 2019, the industry remains on track to generate nearly $6 billion annually. JPMorgan Chase is a primary driver of this revenue, accounting for roughly 19% of all reported overdraft and NSF fees in the first half of 2026. Other major players contributing significantly to these totals include Wells Fargo.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) notes that the average overdraft fee is approximately $35. The financial impact of these fees disproportionately affects younger, lower-income, and underrepresented demographic groups.
