US bans imports from BGI Group and affiliates over forced labor allegations

The Trump administration has announced a ban on imports from three Chinese genomics companies: BGI Group, BGI Genomics, and MGI Tech. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) added these entities to the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA) Entity List, alleging they are linked to forced labor in China’s Xinjiang region.

Federal officials claim the companies participated in government-led genetic testing initiatives used to monitor and repress persecuted ethnic minorities, including Uyghurs, Kazakhs, and Kyrgyz people. The DHS stated these activities helped facilitate the recruitment, transport, and transfer of forced labor. Effective October 29, U.S. Customs and Border Protection will apply a rebuttable presumption that goods from these companies are prohibited from entering the United States.

BGI Group and its affiliates have rejected the allegations, stating they have not engaged in any form of forced labor and that their work is for civilian and scientific purposes. China’s Ministry of Commerce criticized the move as “political manipulation” and “bullying under the guise of protecting human rights.”

The trade restrictions come amid heightened economic and technological competition between the U.S. and China, following recent Treasury Department proposals to restrict U.S. investments in Chinese biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and supercomputing.
