US battery manufacturers pivot to energy storage amid slowing EV demand
As demand for electric vehicles slows in the United States, battery manufacturers are shifting their focus toward large-scale energy storage solutions. This transition aims to support wind and solar power plants by storing energy to mitigate supply fluctuations and meet peak demand.
Major automotive companies, including Ford, GM, and Tesla, are adapting to this shift. Tesla has announced plans to expand its production of batteries specifically for energy storage. While the manufacturing processes and quality standards for EV and storage batteries are largely identical, the market application is changing.
Industry experts note that while the U.S. still imports nearly 60% of its lithium batteries from China and Hong Kong, domestic capacity is growing. Companies like LG Energy Solution operate the largest battery factory in the U.S. Growth in installed capacity is being driven by legislative changes and tax incentives, which help stabilize the renewable energy grid by allowing solar and wind power to function beyond daylight or windy periods.
