US beef tariffs waived as high prices impact consumers

The United States has announced a 90-day waiver of tariffs on 300,000 tonnes of beef trimmings to address high domestic costs. This move is expected to impact international trade dynamics, particularly for Australia and Brazil.

Australia has nearly reached its beef export quota to the US, with approximately 64,000 tonnes remaining. Analysts suggest the tariff relief may offer more benefits to Brazil, which has already filled its quota and has been paying a 26.4% tariff. There are concerns that Brazilian beef could displace Australian exports in the US market.

Domestically, high beef prices are beginning to affect consumer behavior. Ground beef prices reached near-record levels in July, averaging approximately $7.12 per pound. As prices test consumer limits, some shoppers are shifting toward cheaper proteins like chicken. Data indicates a slight decline in beef sales volumes, marking a departure from the growth seen in previous years.
