Collectors Hunt Rare 2013 $1 New York Star Note Duplicates
In 2013 the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing produced a series of $1 "star" notes for New York (B series) at both its Washington, D.C., and Fort Worth, Texas facilities. Because the two plants used overlapping serial‑number ranges, a small number of notes were printed twice, creating duplicate notes with identical serial numbers.
A handful of collectors have managed to locate matching pairs; only three or four such pairs have been documented. Certified matched pairs have fetched tens of thousands of dollars at auction, while most duplicates remain unpaired and sell for modest amounts on secondary markets such as eBay. The odds of finding a matching partner are described as "astronomical," but enthusiasts continue to search, driven by the novelty and potential value of the rare duplicates.
