U.S. bishops urge Supreme Court to protect religious freedom

U.S. bishops and religious leaders are calling on the Supreme Court to intervene regarding administrative rules that may impede religious freedom. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, alongside the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, has filed an amicus brief in support of Daniel Grand.

Grand is involved in a legal dispute with the city of University Heights, Ohio, after his attempts to convene a minyan, a Jewish prayer group, were blocked. Previous federal court rulings dismissed his case based on the legal concept of ‘finality,’ which requires property owners to obtain a decision on land use from local officials before seeking relief in federal court.

The Supreme Court is expected to consider the issue of finality, and Grand is being represented by the legal group Alliance Defending Freedom.
