US blockade limits access to rehabilitation technology in Cuba
The United States blockade is preventing Cuba from accessing advanced rehabilitation technologies, such as robotics, which could improve the quality of life for patients. Yamilé Sánchez, president of the Cuban Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, stated that the policy impacts the entire healthcare sector by causing shortages of medicines, supplies, and consumables.
Sánchez noted that the US government prohibits the sale of spare parts and equipment necessary for maintenance, limiting the lifespan and functionality of existing technology. The country also faces a deficit of botulinum toxin, a critical medication used to treat spasticity in patients with neurological conditions, including cerebral palsy and spinal cord injuries.
Furthermore, there is a significant shortage of assistive devices for people with disabilities, such as wheelchairs and canes. While Cuba maintains a primary healthcare network providing integral rehabilitation services even in remote areas, much of the current equipment is non-functional due to these restrictions.
