US Boeing P-8A Poseidon conducts reconnaissance over Black Sea
A US Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft has conducted a new reconnaissance mission over the western Black Sea near the Bulgarian coast. This marks the second such appearance of this aircraft type in the region within a few days, following its arrival in Varna from the Sigonella Naval Air Station in Italy.
The mission comes amid heightened security concerns following frequent attacks on commercial vessels in the western Black Sea. Recent incidents include drone strikes near the coasts of Bulgaria and Romania; notably, the cargo ship Khoryv sank near Constanta, Romania, in late October, resulting in one death and several crew members missing. Reports indicate that approximately seven ships have been hit and four sunk during recent strikes, with an estimated 30 sailors killed.
The P-8A Poseidon is equipped for maritime patrol, intelligence gathering, and the detection of both surface vessels and submarines. Bulgarian President Rumen Radev previously confirmed that such flights are intended to identify potential threats, noting that Bulgaria expects additional support from NATO allies.
