Trump Administration Advances $46 B Smart Border Wall

The Trump administration is deploying a $46 billion "smart wall" along the U.S.-Mexico border, combining 30‑foot steel fencing with sensors, cameras, towers and floating buoys. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reports building roughly 6 miles (10 km) of wall per week, adding 74 miles (119 km) by mid‑June 2026 and planning to construct hundreds more. About 535 miles of the roughly 2,000‑mile border, where terrain is already a barrier, will rely on ground sensors and towers instead of physical fencing.

Officials say the technology complements the physical barrier and frees agents for other duties. CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott testified, "It’s a smart wall. It’s not just a barrier," emphasizing the use of agents as the agency’s most valuable resource. Critics, including Southern Border Communities Coalition policy counsel Ricky Garza, warn that the expansion threatens local privacy and forces migrants onto more dangerous routes, stating, "We are seeing a massive expansion of surveillance and surveillance technology across the borderlands."

The project continues amid intense scrutiny over its cost, impact on border communities, and broader immigration policy debates.
