Syria nuclear material removal deal brokered by US and Israel
The United States has brokered a trilateral agreement between Syria and Israel to allow the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to remove nuclear material from a clandestine Syrian facility known as ‘Site 99’. The agreement, reportedly signed approximately three weeks ago, aims to prevent regional escalation involving Israel and potentially Turkey.
The material at Site 99 is described as remnants from the former Al-Kibar nuclear reactor, which Israel bombed in 2007. The stockpile includes yellowcake, a concentrated uranium powder. While officials state the material cannot be used to manufacture nuclear weapons in its current form, they warned it could be used to create a ‘dirty bomb’ if dispersed via conventional explosives.
Israel has closely monitored the site for two years and previously bombed its entrances following the collapse of the Assad regime in late 2024. Israeli officials reportedly threatened further military action if the material was not evacuated or if the new Syrian government attempted to access it. The IAEA is expected to begin the removal process soon, with the goal of completing it before the end of the year.
