US-Canada trade relations escalate as both nations impose retaliatory tariffs
Trade negotiations between the United States and Canada have collapsed, triggering a significant escalation in trade tensions. Following the breakdown of talks, the US imposed 50 percent tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, representing about 5.5 percent of Canada's total exports to the US.
In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada will implement retaliatory tariffs on a dollar-for-dollar basis. These measures, scheduled to take effect on September 8, will target American industries including steel, dairy, paper, electronics, household appliances, and agricultural machinery.
US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy criticized the Canadian response, stating that Canada is at a disadvantage because the US absorbs roughly 70 percent of its exports. Carney defended the decision, stating that the US presented terms that were 'uneconomic and unfair' and would undermine the net benefits for Canada.
