U.S.-Canada trade talks continue following pause on 50% tariffs
President Donald Trump has implemented a three-day pause on proposed 50 per cent tariffs targeting various Canadian goods. This temporary reprieve comes as officials from the United States, Canada, and Mexico engage in negotiations to reach a potential North American trade agreement.
Canadian provincial leaders have expressed varying degrees of optimism regarding the progress of these talks. Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston expressed optimism, noting that Prime Minister Mark Carney has requested provinces to restock American alcohol. British Columbia Premier David Eby reported that the federal government has made substantial progress in strategic sectors, while Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe expressed hope for reduced tariffs on steel, aluminum, autos, and lumber.
However, some leaders remain cautious. Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette stated it is too early to judge the impact of the negotiations, noting a need for more information to determine the outcome for her province.
