U.S.-Canada relations face tension over tariffs and political interference
Diplomatic and economic tensions between the United States and Canada have escalated following accusations from the U.S. embassy regarding Canadian political interference. The embassy released a list of quotes from Canadian politicians, including Industry Minister Mélanie Joly, which it claims indicate plans to influence American politics and pressure U.S. businesses in response to American-imposed tariffs.
Prime Minister Mark Carney responded to the accusations by stating that Canada’s actions have been taken in the interest of Canadian workers and families, noting that the United States initiated the trade actions.
Concurrently, the Parliamentary Budget Office has lowered its economic growth forecasts for 2026 and 2027 due to the breakdown in trade talks and the subsequent cycle of U.S. tariffs and Canadian countermeasures. The PBO projects real GDP growth of 0.9% for this year and 1.5% for 2027, while forecasting a budgetary deficit of $63.3 billion for the 2026-27 fiscal year.
Former chief trade negotiator Steve Verheul noted that digital sovereignty and issues like the Online News Act remain significant battlegrounds, suggesting Canada should coordinate with allies like the European Union to manage tensions with the U.S. regarding big tech regulations.
