US cannabis legalization linked to increased cardiovascular hospitalizations

A study published in the journal BMJ Open has linked the legalization of recreational cannabis in the United States to an increase in hospital admissions for cardiovascular diseases. Researchers analyzed more than 50 million hospital discharge records between 2012 and 2018 to observe trends in regions that enacted legalization laws.

The study found that in the Western United States, admissions for atrial fibrillation, heart failure, and heart attacks increased at a faster rate following the enactment of recreational cannabis laws compared to regions without such legislation. Specifically, rates for atrial fibrillation rose just over 2% faster, heart failure nearly 4% faster, and heart attacks just over 3% faster.

Researchers noted that patients hospitalized for these conditions in legalization areas had an average age of 51, compared to an average age of 55 in other regions. These patients were also more likely to reside in higher-income ZIP codes and were less likely to identify as white.
