U.S. Catholic Church observes National Migration Week

The U.S. Catholic Church will observe National Migration Week from September 21 to September 27, concluding with the 112th World Day of Migrants and Refugees. This year’s theme, “Even just one of these children,” was selected by Pope Leo XIV to emphasize the importance of listening to the stories of migrant children and safeguarding their fundamental rights to life and development.

Bishop Brendan J. Cahill, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Migration, issued a statement urging U.S. officials and lawmakers to implement policies that uphold the “God-given human dignity” of migrants and prevent family separations. Cahill highlighted concerns regarding the undermining of protections for migrant populations, specifically citing prolonged detention stays and decreased access to legal representation.

The observance also reflects on the Church’s historical role in supporting immigrants and refugees, noting the ongoing work of diocesan charities in providing vital support to families.
