US cattle producers monitor impact of expanded beef imports

Expanded beef imports aimed at increasing lean beef supplies and lowering consumer prices are prompting concern among US cattle producers regarding domestic cow values, producer returns, and herd rebuilding.

In the futures markets, October live cattle and November feeder cattle recently hit multi-week highs before experiencing routine profit-taking pressure. The USDA reported that cash cattle traded last week at an average of $222.82, an increase of $3.76 from the previous week. Boxed beef prices showed mixed results, with Choice grade increasing while Select grade saw a slight decrease.

Trade resumption is progressing through a phased approach. The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service estimated that 1,800 head of Mexican cattle crossed through Douglas, Arizona, during the week of September 15. This movement continues as screwworm counts remain steady, though a broader reopening of trade remains conditional.
