U.S. Census Bureau proposes changes to demographic data collection
The Trump administration has proposed significant changes to the U.S. Census that could alter how demographic data is collected and used for congressional representation and federal funding allocation. The proposal from the U.S. Census Bureau includes adding a question regarding respondents’ legal status while seeking to remove questions concerning race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation.
Experts and civil rights advocates warn that these changes could diminish the accuracy of population counts and impact the political power of various communities. Specifically, advocates suggest the overhaul could suppress Black representation and undermine the distribution of billions in federal funds. The administration maintains that the changes prioritize the Constitutional mandate to count residents based on where they live most of the time, aiming to prevent the census from being “distorted in any way by questions about immaterial personal characteristics, such as race.”
In states like Maryland, officials and academics express concern that a loss of detailed demographic data will make it difficult to understand local population shifts and ensure fair representation in the U.S. House of Representatives.
