U.S. Census Bureau reports housing as primary driver for relocation

Data from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that housing remains the primary driver for relocation, accounting for 41.6% of movers in 2022. The most frequent specific motivation was the desire for newer, better, or larger living spaces, followed by the establishment of new households.

While marital status changes saw an increase in frequency between 2021 and 2022, overall mobility in the United States has seen a decline. In 2021, approximately 27.1 million Americans reported living at a different address than the previous year, representing an 8.4% mover rate—the lowest documented by the Bureau in over seventy years.
