U.S. Central Command origins linked to Iranian Revolution and Soviet invasion

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) was established in response to major geopolitical shifts in the Middle East during the early 1980s. The command's origins are linked to the Iranian Revolution and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, both of which altered the regional security landscape and prompted Washington to seek more flexible military response mechanisms.

In March 1980, President Jimmy Carter created the Rapid Deployment Joint Task Force (RDJTF) to provide the United States with a force capable of responding quickly to threats affecting American interests in the region. Following the determination that a permanent structure was necessary, President Ronald Reagan officially transformed the RDJTF into the United States Central Command on January 1, 1983.
