AI demand drives surge in GPU prices and computing power costs
The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence and data center infrastructure is causing significant shifts in the semiconductor and computing markets. System integrator Stince Built has warned that GPU prices are expected to rise sharply due to intense demand from the AI sector, a trend that may persist for a long time.
Reports suggest NVIDIA may be shifting its production strategy, potentially halting production of the flagship RTX 5090 to prioritize higher-margin professional workstation and AI chips. This supply reallocation, combined with rising component costs, has already seen some flagship graphics card prices increase by 50% to 60% compared to last year. Major Taiwanese manufacturers, including ASUS, Gigabyte, and MSI, have previously implemented price hikes of up to 20%.
In the computing power rental market, a significant price disparity has emerged. Spot rental prices for AI computing power have reached as high as $50 billion per gigawatt, which is double the rates seen in long-term contracts. However, Goldman Sachs analysts suggest this high spot price reflects a temporary shortage. They predict that once hyperscalers complete their own self-built capacity, the current spot price premium will likely disappear.
Globally, the AI race is driving massive infrastructure investments, with Japan committing $20.4 billion to sovereign AI projects and the US seeing significant capital flows into AI-related data centers and semiconductor supply chains.
