US and China agree to $30 billion tariff cuts and AI dialogue
Following a three-day state visit by President Xi Jinping to Washington, the United States and China have reached several agreements aimed at stabilizing bilateral relations. A primary outcome is a reciprocal agreement to reduce tariffs on approximately $30 billion worth of non-sensitive goods. US exports eligible for these reductions include agricultural commodities, timber, and cosmetics, while Chinese exports include small appliances, toys, and decorations.
The two nations also agreed to extend their existing trade truce by two months, providing additional time for negotiators to develop a broader long-term trade framework. To facilitate ongoing economic coordination, both sides will establish a Bilateral Trade Council and an investment committee.
In the technology sector, the leaders agreed to launch a high-level dialogue on artificial intelligence, officially adopting the term ‘superintelligence’ for use in formal discussions. While both sides agreed to hold regular talks on the risks and benefits of the technology, significant differences remain. President Xi emphasized that AI must remain under human control, whereas President Trump has expressed a preference for maintaining the current regulatory status quo.
Regarding geopolitical issues, both leaders expressed opposition to Iran developing nuclear weapons and to the imposition of tolls on international waterways. However, tensions persist over other matters; President Xi urged the US to remain prudent regarding Taiwan, and discrepancies were noted in how each nation reported progress on critical mineral supply chains, such as rare earths.
