U.S.-China summit to address detained citizens and trade tensions
Ahead of a summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, attention is focused on the detention of American citizens in China and ongoing trade tensions.
Yufang Rong, the wife of detained seismologist Youlin Chen, expressed hope that President Trump will personally intervene to secure her husband's release. Chen, a Boston-based scientist, was detained in November 2024 and charged with espionage, a charge his family denies. Along with Chen, the U.S. government considers Min Zin to be wrongfully detained in China.
Separately, U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth has expressed skepticism regarding the upcoming summit, noting that previous Chinese commitments to purchase 200 Boeing aircraft and $17 billion in agricultural products have not been met. Duckworth warned that failing to resolve tariff issues could result in significant economic consequences for American farmers and a wave of bankruptcies.
