US cities confront surge in gun violence and public safety challenges

Wilmington, Delaware has experienced a series of shootings across multiple neighborhoods, affecting victims as young as 16. Incidents since July have included shootings in West Center City, Price Run, Southbridge, Baynard Village and near Fourth and DuPont streets. Most victims survived, though several were seriously injured. A hospital shooting in June left one employee dead and another critically injured; a 23‑year‑old suspect, John Wallace‑Bey, was arrested and charged with first‑degree murder.

In Boston, Massachusetts, city leaders, business owners and residents gathered for a public‑safety summit to address a recent uptick in crime in the Downtown Crossing area. Recent incidents cited include a stabbing near the Park Street MBTA station, a deadly attack near Boylston Street, assaults on a Boston University student, and multiple shootings along Tremont Street. Officials pledged increased police enforcement, a larger security presence, and block‑by‑block tactical changes, emphasizing a zero‑tolerance policy for criminal activity.
