US cities promote active transportation for students through safety programs

In Seattle, the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is continuing safety improvements near schools through its Safe Routes to School program. This follows a voter-approved transportation levy, with 30 of over 70 planned projects completed last year. Data indicates that approximately one-third of Seattle K-5 students walk, roll, or bike to school, contributing to a 17% increase in these modes of transport since 2005. Local authorities are also reminding drivers to adhere to 20 mph speed limits in school zones.
