US ex‑police officer Chad Eberle transferred to Saltillo prison after triple homicide

On August 4 2026 a gunman opened fire in a home in the Espinoza Mireles colonia of Saltillo, Coahuila, killing three family members – Ana Laura de León (44), Emmanuel Montero (54) and Laura Jaquelín Mora de León (22) – and seriously injuring Litzy Anahí Mora de León (26). The suspect was identified as Chad Eberle, a 35‑year‑old United States citizen and former Texas police reserve officer.

After the attack he abducted his three‑year‑old son and fled toward International Bridge 2 in Piedras Negras attempting to cross into Texas. Mexican security forces intercepted him, rescued the child unharmed and placed the boy under the protection of the Procuraduría para Niños, Niñas y la Familia (PRONNIF). An arrest warrant was issued for femicide, qualified homicide and related offenses. Chad Eberle was taken into custody, transferred to the male penitentiary in Saltillo and remains under judicial control. The operation involved state police, the National Guard, the Mexican Navy, the Army and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
