US passport process to move online and receive visual redesign

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced significant updates to the American passport system, including a visual redesign and a shift toward digital applications.

Starting as early as late 2026 or 2027, first-time passport applicants will be able to complete the entire process online via the new America.gov platform. This AI-driven portal aims to eliminate the need for in-person appointments, physical form printing, and pharmacy photo visits. The digital system will allow users to upload photos from their own devices, pay fees, and track their application status in real time.

A new passport design, titled ‘Flight of the Eagle,’ is scheduled for implementation in 2028. While maintaining the traditional blue cover, the redesign will feature a larger gold Great Seal and interior pages with historical illustrations, such as the American Revolution and space exploration. The pages will also include an animated eagle motif that creates a flying effect when the book is flipped. Additionally, the State Department plans to move to a standardized 38-page book and introduce more secure, premium packaging for delivery.
