US City Councils Debate Data Center Moratoriums
Local governments in Jacksonville and Aurora are navigating debates regarding moratoriums on new data center developments.
In Jacksonville, the city council has agreed to discuss a potential moratorium at an upcoming meeting. Alderman Rob Thomas proposed the measure to ensure regulations are in place before new sites are proposed, a sentiment supported by Alderwoman Alison Rubin de Celis. Mayor Andy Ezard suggested a one-year pause to allow a special studies committee sufficient time for review. Currently, no formal requests for data center locations have been submitted to the mayor’s office.
In Aurora, the City Council recently delayed a vote on an indefinite moratorium on data center applications. While Mayor Mike Coffman and several council members supported the pause to allow for new regulations, the proposal failed to reach the seven votes required for reconsideration. The debate follows significant public backlash regarding the planned Trident data center project near the Windler and Green Valley Ranch neighborhoods. Officials noted that any moratorium would not affect the Trident project, as its application has already been accepted.
