US climate research faces disruptions under Trump administration

Under the second term of President Donald Trump, US climate research is facing significant disruptions. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has canceled the 2026 Arctic Report Card, a benchmark publication that has been released annually since 2006. NOAA stated only that coordination for the report “will not be facilitated through NOAA,” without providing further explanation.

Additionally, the National Academy of Sciences has removed a chapter regarding climate science from a reference manual intended for judges. These actions follow previous mass layoffs and budget cuts within the administration.

Climatologists warn that these moves aim to “bury the science” and “impose ignorance” on a system facing record-breaking heat. Experts note that Arctic warming, or “Arctic amplification,” has global consequences, such as affecting the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, which influences European winter temperatures.
