U.S. closes Winnipeg consulate, sparking Manitoba PC disappointment

The United States announced the closure of its consular post in Winnipeg, the only such shutdown in North America as part of a plan to close five smaller diplomatic facilities. The consulate, which did not provide visa or consular services but housed a trade representative, will have its duties shifted to the U.S. embassy in Ottawa.

Manitoba Progressive Conservative leader Obby Khan called the decision disappointing and blamed Premier Wab Kinew for failing to secure new trade deals despite the province spending about $1 million annually on a Washington, D.C., trade office. Kahn said Manitoba’s economy is falling behind and that businesses and families are paying the price. Kinew’s office said the matter is a federal issue and deferred comment. The closure comes amid ongoing tensions over tariffs, including Manitoba’s recent ban on U.S.-made alcohol, and Premier Kinew’s criticism of former President Donald Trump’s policies.
