U.S. Coast Guard and Dominican Navy rescue 61 migrants from sinking vessel

The U.S. Coast Guard and the Dominican Navy rescued 61 migrants from an overloaded, 9-meter vessel that was sinking in the Atlantic Ocean. The incident occurred early Monday morning near Cabo Cabrón on the Samaná Peninsula in northeastern Dominican Republic.

The crew of the cutter Winslow Griesser detected the vessel at approximately 5:50 a.m. local time. The rescue operation included aerial support from an MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Borinquen and an aircraft from the Dominican Air Force. Dominican Navy patrol boats Capella CG-108 and Algenib Ll-169 also arrived to assist. All 61 survivors were transferred to Dominican Navy units, though their nationalities have not been confirmed.

This rescue follows a similar shipwreck in the Mona Passage last Sunday, where authorities rescued 49 people, recovered three bodies, and reported 10 individuals missing.
