U.S. Coast Guard repatriates 16 Dominican nationals

The U.S. Coast Guard has repatriated 16 Dominican nationals to the Dominican Republic following the interception of an overloaded vessel in the Mona Passage near Puerto Rico.

On Monday, a 22-foot improvised boat was spotted near Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, by a Coast Guard helicopter. The vessel was carrying 19 people, including 14 men, three women, and two minors. Following the interception by the Coast Guard cutter Richard Dixon, the group was transferred to the cutter Joseph Tezanos for repatriation.

Fourteen of the migrants were transferred at sea to the Dominican Navy vessel Bellatrix, while the two minors were taken ashore to representatives of the National Council for Children and Adolescents (CONANI). Authorities warned against attempting such illegal maritime journeys due to the extreme dangers posed by overloaded and poorly maintained vessels.
