U.S. judge orders reinstatement of 2027 Green Card Lottery
A federal judge in California has ordered the U.S. Department of State to reinstate the 2027 Diversity Visa (Green Card) Lottery. Judge Jinsook Ohta issued a preliminary injunction in the case Red Eagle Law, L.C. v. Rubio after the program's registration period had not been opened as scheduled.
The ruling requires the Department of State to publicly announce the registration period, including opening and closing dates, no later than midnight on October 15. The registration window must remain open for at least 30 days. The program, which provides up to 55,000 visas annually to individuals from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States, had faced delays that critics argued amounted to a de facto cancellation.
The court also ordered that applications be processed according to standard procedures until the 55,000 visa allocation is exhausted or the 2027 fiscal year concludes.
