Baja California boat capsizes; 16 rescued, 11 missing

A search operation is underway for 11 missing persons after a boat capsized in the Pacific Ocean, approximately 140 miles west of Ensenada, Mexico. The incident occurred early Friday morning following a Mayday call received around 1:00 a.m.

The U.S. Coast Guard and Navy, with assistance from the Mexican Navy, rescued 16 Mexican nationals from the water. Several survivors required immediate medical attention, including treatment for suspected shark bites and critical injuries. The rescued individuals were transported to hospitals in San Diego, California.

Rescuers reported finding only debris and no intact vessel at the scene. While the exact purpose of the voyage remains unclear, authorities noted the area is a known route for maritime smuggling. Search efforts continue using helicopters, aircraft, and naval vessels.
