US Coast Guard rescues two juvenile humpback whales off Fire Island
Two juvenile humpback whales were successfully rescued after becoming stranded on sandbars off Fire Island, New York. The US Coast Guard responded to the incident near Saltaire at approximately 8:30 a.m. following reports of a whale in shallow waters.
To assist the animals, Coast Guard personnel kept the whales hydrated by spraying them with water to prevent dehydration and sunburn. Crews also used their vessel to create a barrier, shielding the whales from nearby boat traffic. The rescue effort involved multiple organizations, including the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, Suffolk Marine Patrol, NOAA Fisheries, and the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
Both whales were able to return to open water, aided by rising tides. During the operation, responders observed a total of three whales in the vicinity of the Fire Island National Seashore.
