U.S. Coast Guard seizes $2.8 million of marijuana near the Bahamas

Coast Guard Cutter Charles Sexton, supported by the U.S. Coast Guard Homeland Security Cutter Ocean and the Royal Bahamian Defense Force, intercepted a go‑fast vessel about 80 miles southwest of Great Inagua, Bahamas. The operation recovered roughly 2,380 pounds of marijuana—about 97 bales—valued at an estimated $2.8 million. The three crew members on the vessel were handed over to Bahamian authorities for prosecution.

The seizure also prompted an internal leadership lesson aboard Coast Guard Cutter Diligence. A junior enlisted Maritime Enforcement Specialist, tasked with preparing a prosecution case, requested relief from watch duties. An Ensign, newly commissioned, negotiated with his superiors to grant the request, highlighting the role of negotiation in junior officer leadership.

Both actions underscore the U.S. Coast Guard’s partnership with regional partners to disrupt transnational drug trafficking and illustrate how operational demands can shape leadership development within the service.
