US Coast Guard seizes $54.5 million in cocaine off Puerto Rico

The US Coast Guard, operating the cutter Richard Dixon, intercepted a suspected drug-smuggling vessel approximately 50 miles south of Puerto Rico on August 21, 2026. The operation, conducted in coordination with Coast Guard Air Station Miami and US Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations, resulted in the seizure of approximately 7,250 pounds (3,290 kilograms) of cocaine. The estimated wholesale value of the narcotics is $54.5 million.

Five individuals on board were detained pending further investigation. Following the inspection, authorities destroyed the vessel at sea because it was determined to pose a hazard to navigation.
