US commercial truck accident fatalities on the rise

Fatal commercial truck accidents in the United States are rising despite advancements in safety technology and regulations. Data from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration indicates that in 2022, there were 15.8 fatal large truck crashes per million people, representing a 50% increase from 2010 levels.

Common crash patterns include rear-end collisions caused by long stopping distances, jackknife and rollover accidents on highways, and underride collisions where smaller vehicles slide beneath a truck. While safety improvements like airbags and electronic stability controls have protected vehicle occupants, they offer little protection against 80,000-pound tractor-trailers. Consequently, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that 62% of fatalities occur in the smaller vehicle involved in a crash.

Recent statistics show a concerning trend: in 2024, large truck crashes claimed lives at a 58% higher rate than in 2009. Additionally, the National Safety Council reported that 120,724 large trucks were involved in injury crashes in 2024, an 18% increase since 2016. Although freeway safety has seen improvements, 51% of fatal truck crashes occur on major roads rather than interstates.
