US communities adapt National Night Out celebrations amid safety and air‑quality concerns
Williston Park, New York merged its centennial celebration with National Night Out on Aug. 4, staging a bike parade for about 25 children and parents. Police officer Mark Maguire highlighted helmet safety, and local officials including Assembly Member Jake Blumencranz, Town Supervisor Jennifer DeSena, Council Member Dennis Walsh and Mayor Paul Ehrbar attended.
In Kennewick, Washington, the National Night Out originally set for Aug. 4 was postponed to Aug. 20 because smoke from western and Canadian wildfires created unhealthy air quality. The rescheduled event will take place at the Southridge Sports Complex and will feature free food, inflatables, rides, vehicle displays and community‑police interaction.
