U.S. companies adopt Chinese AI models despite technology restrictions

American corporations are increasingly utilizing Chinese artificial intelligence models, such as those from Moonshot AI and Alibaba, to reduce costs. Companies including DoorDash and Airbnb have reportedly adopted Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 model, which offers an open-weight architecture that allows for easier customization and deployment compared to expensive proprietary services.

This trend highlights a growing contradiction in U.S. policy, as Washington implements export restrictions on advanced semiconductors and high-performance computing to limit China's technological progress. Despite these measures, Chinese developers are optimizing models for domestic hardware and releasing competitive, low-cost alternatives.

A recent study indicates the performance gap between U.S. and Chinese AI is narrowing, with top Chinese models estimated to be within 3% of their American counterparts. This shift is placing significant pricing pressure on U.S.-based developers like OpenAI and Anthropic, who face intense competition from affordable, open-source Chinese models.
