U.S. confirms Canada’s cultural protections won't face trade actions
Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc announced that the United States has confirmed Canada’s language and culture protections will not be subject to future trade actions. This follows a period of heightened tension after trade negotiations between the two nations collapsed last week.
Prime Minister Mark Carney had previously characterized the negotiations as untenable, accusing U.S. negotiators of attempting to restrict Canada’s ability to form other trade deals and interfering with cultural protections. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer disputed this characterization, stating that while there were questions regarding the Online Streaming Act and Quebec’s Bill 109, these issues were not dealbreakers.
In response to recent U.S. duties, Canada is preparing retaliatory measures. Finance Canada has indicated it is adjusting a list of counter-tariffs, which includes raising tariffs on U.S. steel and aluminum from 25% to 50%, as well as imposing tariffs between 15% and 50% on hundreds of other U.S. exports, such as clothing.
