US Congress demands formal strategy for Mali security

Bipartisan members of the US Congress are calling on the Trump administration to establish a formal strategy for Mali as security threats escalate across the Sahel region. Lawmakers from both the House and Senate foreign relations committees have expressed concern regarding the security vacuum created by the withdrawal of Western forces and the increasing presence of Russian paramilitary units in West Africa.

Proposed legislation, drafted by Representative Jimmy Panetta and Representative Joe Wilson, seeks to set parameters for renewed US engagement with Mali. The bill would require the administration to report on the expansion of the militant group Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and investigate its financing methods, such as gold trading and illicit commercial networks. Additionally, the legislation would task Secretary of State Marco Rubio with developing a strategy involving diplomatic initiatives, intelligence sharing, and measures to disrupt extremist recruitment.

The push for a coherent policy comes as Washington reassesses its ties with the Alliance of Sahel States, following military coups in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. While Mali remains a significant gold producer, the country’s security crisis and shifting geopolitical alliances pose risks to regional economic stability and international commercial interests.
