US Congress extends Afghanistan War Commission mandate
The US Congress has extended the mandate of the bipartisan Afghanistan War Commission by one year. This extension provides the independent panel additional time to complete its comprehensive review of the two-decade US military and diplomatic involvement in Afghanistan.
Co-chairs Shamila Chaudhary and Colin Jackson stated that the extra time will allow for deeper investigation and more thorough research to ensure findings are evidence-based. The commission aims to examine key decisions made from the initial 2001 intervention through the 2021 withdrawal, including military campaigns, diplomatic efforts, and development programs.
The final report, which is now expected in August 2027, is intended to provide recommendations to help future US leaders avoid similar failures in military and foreign policy decisions.
