U.S. Congress passes bipartisan sanctions bill targeting Russian energy and finance

The U.S. Congress has passed a major bipartisan sanctions bill targeting Russia, which has now been sent to President Donald Trump for signature. The legislation aims to increase economic pressure on the Kremlin by targeting Russia's financial sector, oligarchs, and energy revenues, specifically oil and gas.

Senator Jeanne Shaheen noted that the bill received strong bipartisan support, passing the Senate with 86 votes in favor and 11 against, and receiving over 100 votes in the House of Representatives. The sanctions are designed to strike at the funding sources of the war in Ukraine. Additionally, the legislation proposes tariffs against five major countries that utilize Russian oil and gas, most notably China and India.

In discussions regarding regional stability, Shaheen highlighted concerns over Russian hybrid warfare and activities along NATO's eastern flank, as well as instability in the Balkans.
