US Congress probes FIFA chief Gianni Infantino over alleged Trump ties

U.S. House Judiciary Committee minority member Rep. Jamie Raskin has asked FIFA president Gianni Infantino to appear before the committee and to provide extensive documentation by Aug. 9. The request seeks records of any gifts, payments, contracts, ticket‑sale arrangements and communications linking the world‑football body with the Donald Trump administration. Raskin’s five‑page letter cites concerns that FIFA may have benefited from favours from the former president’s government.

Infantino, who has long been described as close to Trump, posted on Instagram that “Football is about unity, not division,” while FIFA announced plans to sell stakes in the World Cup financing to external investors, a move that has sparked controversy and added to the scrutiny.

The congressional inquiry marks the first formal U.S. legislative examination of FIFA’s relationship with the Trump era, and it could lead to further demands for transparency or corrective action.
