U.S. Congress signals potential shift in Bosnia and Herzegovina policy

During a U.S. Congressional hearing on security challenges and ethnic tensions in the Western Balkans, officials signaled a potential shift in American foreign policy regarding Bosnia and Herzegovina. Kit Selvage, chairman of the House Subcommittee on Europe, stated that the dissolution of the country is a possibility, noting that it may not be outside the realm of possibility given the stances of Republika Srpska.

U.S. officials also addressed the future of international involvement in the region. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Lotton indicated that the U.S. administration seeks to move away from international interventionism that affects the sovereignty of Bosnia and Herzegovina, instead encouraging local leaders to take responsibility without international management.

Discussions included the eventual closure of the Office of the High Representative (OHR). Selvage suggested that the next High Representative should work toward the ultimate goal of closing the office once conditions are met. Additionally, while some members of Congress criticized the removal of sanctions against Milorad Dodik, others suggested such decisions were intended to stabilize the situation in the country.
