Taiwan urged by US delegation to fast‑track drone legislation
U.S. Representative Young Kim, chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee’s Asia‑Pacific subcommittee, led a bipartisan delegation to Taiwan and pressed the island’s legislature to quickly pass a special drone law. The proposed bill would allocate roughly NT$210 billion (about €5.6 billion) to fund the purchase and domestic production of combat and reconnaissance drones, with a goal of manufacturing 100 000 units per month by 2030. Taiwan has also pledged to raise defense spending to 5 % of GDP by 2030. Kim warned that “time is short” and cited the Ukraine and Iran wars as proof that large‑scale drone capability is essential for modern defence. President Lai Ching‑te welcomed the visit, noting U.S. willingness to provide technical assistance and to build secure supply chains that do not rely on Chinese components. The delegation’s message was aimed at both Taiwan’s government and legislators who have delayed the drone bill, signalling strong U.S. support amid growing Chinese military pressure.
