The United States is weighing a delay or possible rejection of Aurélien Lechevallier’s appointment as France’s ambassador to Washington. Lechevallier, a former Élysée aide and current chief of staff to French Foreign Minister Jean‑Noël Barrot, was nominated by President Emmanuel Macron with the expectation of taking up the post by September.

The diplomatic tension stems from a post by France’s mission to the United Nations in Geneva that criticised the United States for voting with Russia, North Korea and seven other countries against extending the mandate of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk. The French mission wrote, “The US used to be a beacon of human rights. Not anymore.” A State Department official responded, “The United States is very disappointed in the irresponsible and disrespectful rhetoric from the French.”

The dispute escalated when the U.S. delegation walked out of a UN Security Council meeting as France addressed the council on Ukraine. Sources say some senior officials in the Trump administration are angry, while others hope to de‑escalate. Blocking the ambassador’s accreditation would be highly unusual and could widen the fissure between the two allies, which have already clashed over tariffs and the Iran conflict.
