US Console Market Faces Historic Decline Amid Rising Prices

The United States console hardware market is experiencing its most precarious period since the early 1980s, according to data from Circana. Through August, Xbox hardware sales plummeted 33 percent year-over-year, marking an all-time low for the brand. PlayStation sales also saw a significant 25 percent decline, representing its weakest performance since 2013.

This downturn is largely attributed to record-high average retail prices. The average price for an Xbox console rose 26 percent to 529 dollars, while PlayStation consoles increased by 20 percent to 597 dollars. Analysts suggest that the surge in component costs, particularly for RAM, is being driven by intense demand from AI data centers.

While the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto VI is expected to boost demand, industry experts warn that component shortages and high prices may limit availability. In response to market uncertainty, Microsoft Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has outlined ‘Project Helix,’ a strategy focused on a multi-device 10th-generation Xbox family to support core console users.
